THIS WEEK'S FEATURED RELEASES & REISSUES
LP - Les Rallizes Denudes - Heavier Than A Death In The Family 2xLP - $31.99
Finally, some Denudes vinyl! Here's what we wrote about the CD releases just a couple years ago:
This is some of our favorite shit ever. Les Rallizes Denudes are proto-psych punk / pre-noise-pop at it's finest. They never released an official record, rarely performed live (although there are some videos on Youtube), and a member the band was involved in an aircraft hijacking to China at one point. Anyhow, these dudes have a metronomic rhythm section with soaring, feedback drenched, acid damaged guitar leads over top with a reverbed-to-the-max vocal spewing every once in a while as well. Some of their songs actually sound quite a bit like looped doo-wop chorus rhythm sections with absolutely overwhelming guitar noise on top. That's where the noise-pop comparison comes from. Obviously, not for everyone, but heads like us will be foaming at the mouth over these guys. Here's the specs on this release via the reissue label, Phoenix:
"Phoenix Records releases the oft-bootlegged Heavier Than A Death In The Family by legendary Japanese rock/psychedelic noise band Les Rallizes Denudés. This "album" is in fact, a blistering assemblage of live performances (all recorded in 1977, except for "People Can Choose," which was recorded in 1973) which sits at an esteemed #3 position on Julian Cope's Japrocksampler top 50 list. Reverb so heavy, it will split your frontal lobe in two. Limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies only, housed in a unique LP-replica card wallet."
Fans of High Rise, Mainliner, Kousokuya, Acid Mothers Temple and Keiji Haino can now own these wonderful records on vinyl without taking out a second mortgage. This is the stuff that the folks doing the best modern psych (Wooden Shjips, Earthless, Purling Hiss) are drawing from. We couldn't be happier to be offering these up and we can say without a doubt that both of these Les Rallizes Denudes LPs will be topping our Best Reissues of ALL TIME list. THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
LP - Les Rallizes Denudes - Blind Baby Has Its Mothers Eyes - $22.99
Finally, some Denudes vinyl!!!! Here's what we wrote about the CD releases just a couple years ago:
This is some of our favorite shit ever. Les Rallizes Denudes are proto-psych punk / pre-noise-pop at it's finest. They never released an official record on their own, rarely performed live (although there are some videos on Youtube), and if we're remembering correctly, a member the band was involved in an aircraft hijacking to China at one point. Anyhow, these dudes have a metronomic rhythm section with soaring, feedback drenched, acid damaged guitar leads over top with a reverbed-to-the-max vocal spewing every once in a while as well. Obviously, not for everyone, but heads like us will be foaming at the mouth over these guys. There's no vinyl available, and hasn't been any for a while now, but even vinyl snobs will want to own this regardless of format, it's that good. Here's the specs on this release via the reissue label, Phoenix:
"Legendary Japanese rock outfit Les Rallizes Denudés were formed in 1967 and incredibly, for a group that had only one official release (Oz Days Live, a double vinyl compilation release in 1973), played their last gig almost 30 years later in October 1996. The band's name apparently means "fucked up and naked," which more than adequately describes their music. Formed by band leader Mizutani Takashi, the music remained remarkably familiar over the years, and is best described as high volume, raw, lo-fi, repetitive, feedback-drenched guitar-noise fests with nods in the direction of The Velvet Underground and Blues Creation, but without the electronics. Radical left-wing politics were never far from the band's agenda, with one original band member (Wakabayashi) being involved in the Japanese Red Army's hijacking of a flight to North Korea. Consequently, the group's live appearances became less frequent and increasingly clandestine. All the band's albums were released in very small quantities, and because of the group's reputation for secrecy and violence, as well as the difficulty in tracking down their recordings, Les Rallizes Denudés has assumed almost mythical status. Blind Baby Has It's Mothers Eyes sits at #11 on Julian Cope's list of top Japanese albums. Limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies only, housed in a unique LP-replica card wallet."

LP - Kurt Cobain - Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings Soundtrack 2xLP - $29.99
Ranges from Early Song Snippets and Short Demos to Musical Experiments and Ultimately, Pieces of Songs or Lyrics That Eventually Appeared on Later Nirvana Albums!
Hailed as one of the most innovative and intimate documentaries of all time, with Montage of Heck acclaimed filmmaker Brett Morgen expertly blends Kurt Cobain's personal archive of art, music, never-before-seen movies, animation and revelatory interviews from his family and closest friends. Wildly creative and highly praised, the documentary follows Kurt from his earliest years in this visceral and detailed cinematic insight of an artist struggling to come to terms and make sense of his place in the world.
Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings will be released as a deluxe 31-track 2LP-set in December 2015 and includes the highly anticipated soundtrack, an aural complement to the documentary in both concept and experience. Comprised from various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone, the soundtrack allows a rare, unfiltered glimpse into Cobain's creative progression from early song snippets and short demos to musical experiments and ultimately, pieces of songs or lyrics that eventually appeared on later Nirvana albums.
The documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, is an authentic and unflinching look into Kurt's life, art and mind through his own unique lens. Following Kurt from his earliest years in Aberdeen, WA, through the height of his fame, the film creates an immersive cinematic insight into an artist who craved the spotlight even as he rejected the trappings of fame. Morgen who wrote, directed and produced the documentary began working on it in 2007 when Cobain's family approached him with the idea and offered him unrestricted access to all of Cobain's personal and family archives. The documentary features Cobain and Courtney Love's only daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, as a co-executive producer on the film and includes footage from various Nirvana performances as well as unreleased home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, and songbooks.
The title, Montage Of Heck, takes its name from a musical collage that was created by Cobain with a 4-track cassette recorder in 1988, of which there are two versions; one is about thirty-six minutes long and the other about eight-minutes long. Several of the film's scenes were animated by Stefan Nadelman and Hisko Hulsing.
Morgen told Billboard that Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings is “curated to feel as though one were sitting in Kurt’s living room watching him create over the course of an afternoon” and the songs range “from thrash to ragtime and everything in between.”

LP - Chicos De Nazca - Blowing Inside - $21.99
CHICOS DE NAZCA are yet another psychedelic product of Santiago’s underground movement, formed in 2010 by guitarist and vocalist FRANCISCO CABALA to run alongside his full time band LA HELL GANG. As part of Chile’s prolific BYM Records collective, Chicos De Nazca benefit from a fluid line-up of musicians who appear across the band’s different albums: IGNACIO RODRIGUEZ (La Hell Gang), JUAN PABLO RODRIGUEZ (FOLLAKZOID), MARTIN AVENDANO (DELTA 21) and CARLOS CABALA have all been part of the Chicos clan at various points. Chicos De Nazca have released three official albums (on BYM Records and Hozac Records) and two unofficial ones, utilizing tape recording, analog effects and endless layers of guitars to build their atmospherics sounds. The group’s characteristic gentle and psychedelic repertoire—in which the rhythm and keyboards are essential to keep the songs afloat—owes a bedt to the generation of rock bands that sprung from the post-acid house fever of 1988 in Chicago and England. A soundtrack for a trip to a place of dreams. Limited to 400 copies on black vinyl. Download included.

LP - Kamikaze Refrigerators – Happy Thoughts - Original 1986 Stock - $14.99
More relevant and convincing words below -
"The Refrigerators' blend of rock & wire & chop is as cool as that of any of their contemporaries. And considering how goddam fertile the Austin scene was in the early Eighties, that's sayin' something. Be glad this was rescued from the slag heap of aborted history."
—Byron Coley; Forced Exposure #13
"Indispensible in any discussion/collection of Austin's rock and roll in the '80s. Happy Thoughts is a bold, defiant statement, capturing a hearty chunk of that stubborn streak of individualism that made punk such an undeniable force to begin with."
—Luke Torn/Austin Chronicle; April 1987
"Their slowly grinding music is a perfect match for their despairing stories of repression and paranoia. After a worthy debut like this you can only wonder why they didn't stay together and grow."
—James Hopkins/Sound Choice #8
"Comparisons to the Minutemen are not entirely without merit; the Kamikaze Refrigerators show all the songwriting skill and mechanical ability of that famous San Pedro trio... This band deserved a chance..."
—CMJ/April 10, 1987

LP - Randy and the Goats - On The Lam - Original 1981 Stock - $29.99
Review from Discogs:
Randy & The Goats.."On the Lam "1981 Private US Hard Psych.
This one's pretty obscure, but I suspect it's only a matter of time until someone discovers it's low-fi charms, word gets out, and it becomes a sought after and extremely pricey collectable.
Good luck finding something about Randy and the Goats on the web or any musical reference works. The only write up I could find was on the wonderful Acid Archives website, written by the ever insightful Aaron Milenski (if Mr. Milenski likes an album, consider buying a copy !). As a result what little I can tell you about the band comes from the liner notes accompanying the band's first and only album.
They were apparently from upstate New York and the line up showcased drummer Rob Cenci, guitarist/keyboard player Mark Chmielinski, bassist Doug Harris, and front man/singer/guitarist Randy Would. Released in 1981, most of their one and only LP was recorded in Rensselar, New York's Cathedral Studios with Chmielinski producing. Two tracks were done at Trod Nossel Studios in Wallingford, Connecticut.
Released on the small Broken Records label, "On the Lam" was one of those early-1980s releases that sported a distinctive mid-1970s sound. By the way, that was meant as a compliment ... That said, let me warn you that the set occasionally shows up on dealer lists slapped with a psych label. In the interests of accuracy I'll tell you that while there were minor psych touches, notably from Chmielinski occasional fuzz guitar and 'It was the End of the Movie Anyway' (which had kind of a cool Blue Oyster Cult 'Don't Fear the Reaper' vibe), the album was better classified as a slice of garage/grunge, or perhaps proto-punk. With Would responsible for writing all of the material (bassist Harris co-wrote two tracks), the album effortlessly bounced around between garage/grunge and haunted singer/songwriter with one pretty if atypical ballad thrown in - by the way the stark and stunning 'Broken' was one of the album highlights. As lead singer Would took a little effort to get acclimated to. His ragged and gruff voice and sometimes mubbling delivery wasn't the prettiest instrument you've stumbled across - imagine a younger Springsteen with a nastier street attitude, or perhaps a young Lou Reed who could actually hold a melody and you'd be in the right aural neighborhood. On the other hand, his voice and biting delivery were well suited to the band's raw sound and after a couple of songs Would actually sounded pretty good on tracks like the rockers 'The Day I Left Town', 'Media-ized', and 'Nausea # 2'. Come to think about it, showcasing Would's dark and depressing tales of urban angst ('Screwed' and 'Murder By Programming') the Lou Reed comparison wasn't that far off ... The album also benefited from The Goats. Cenci and Harris were a devastating rhythm section (Harris' bass way up front in the mix), kicking the crap out of these songs, while Chmielinski turned in some nice lead guitar throughout the set - check out his solo on 'Screwed')
