THIS WEEK'S FEATURED RELEASES & REISSUES
LP - Salad Boys - Metalmania - Clear Wax - $13.99
The group’s self-titled mini-album released in 2013 caused something of a mini-sensation, receiving praise from the likes of Stolen Girlfriends Club, Mess and Noise, hhhhappy.com and many more. In real life, the Salad Boys perform a wondrous assault: a charged up blitz of clanging guitars, intoxicating drones, head-down acid repetition and an abundance of dazzling pop hooks. This notoriety has scored the group a wealth of engagements up and down New Zealand including slots at the Camp a Low Hum and Chronophonium festivals, gigs with Sebadoh, The Bats, & Parquet Courts as well as a highly honorable spot performing as backing band for David Kilgour of legendary NZ group The Clean.
2015 finds the band prepping their proper full-length debut "Metalmania" out in September on Chicago label, Trouble In Mind Records & routing a full coast-to-coast US-tour in Sept/Oct including a stop at Gonerfest in Memphis, TN.

LP - Primitive Parts - Parts Primitive - Black Wax - $13.99
After signing to Trouble in Mind in 2015 they immediately bought a Tascam 388 multitrack tape device. The resulting recording process was executed succinctly over the next three working days across two locations - the bandspractice room in Homerton and Corstorphine's home, a former furniture factory in Hackney Wick.
Parts Primitive consists of ten close-knit and succinct songs that aim to evoke a sonic space that could be an imagined 1970s. ‘Miracle Skin’, ‘Signal’, ‘Rented Housing’ and ‘Troubles’ are influenced equally by the dynamic Australian garage rock of The UV Race, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control as they are by the pop sensibilities and British charm of early Eno, The Kinks and Blur. First single, ‘Being There’ is a homage to the 1979 Peter Sellers film about a simple, sheltered gardener. Album closer, ‘Ever Outward’, features an improvised outro played by all three members on drum machine and cassette loops.
Parts Primitive was recorded by the band directly onto two 7" reels of quarter inch tape, mixed by Mark Jasper at Soundsavers and mastered by Mikey Young overseas. The artwork makes a nod to 1970s photo books 'British Image 1 and 2' and Euan Duff's 'How We Are', old council and library letter heads and the painfully thin paper picture sleeves of records by bands like Vain Aims and Protex.
The album follows two sold-out singles on the SEXBEAT and Faux Discxlabels, both of which received heavy air-play from BBC 6's Marc Riley and Jenn Long and were acclaimed by critics including Stereogum and NME. The album is the bands first engagement for the Trouble in Mind label. Primitive Parts have shared stages with Twerps, Franz Ferdinand, The Homosexuals and Juan Wauters. Having recently bought a car, they are due to embark on a full UK tour in Autumn.

LP - Wand - 1000 Days - $18.99
- Drag City
LP - Destruction Unit - Negative Feedback Resistor - $14.99
In the spirit of solidarity with the other revolutionary communities of our sisters and brothers, the psychedelic Unit urges you to use this album’s energy, energy your speakers can hardly contain, for its intended purpose: to break the chains which you, at the dawn of your understanding, have fastened around your hands and feet. And to see to it that the thrones of every despot erected within you are destroyed. This is crazed-psychedelic-freek-noise guerrilla warfare and these are our streets. The pigs of the law can use their system to manipulate and censor our messages. The control creeps can keep their airwaves safe and comfortable. But none of them have been able to make us turn our voices or our guitar amps down. Destruction Unit sacrificed their ears to make this album as loud of a statement as possible. Will you lend them yours?

LP - Earthless Meets Heavy Blanket - In A Dutch Haze - $24.99
After an impromptu heavy psych jam at SXSW left the crowd stunned and breathless, J MASCIS (DINOSAUR JR.) and EARTHLESS were asked to play the main stage of the Roadburn Festival in Holland. When Earthless guitarist ISAIAH MITCHELL had to back out at the last minute due to other commitments, GRAHAM CLISE from HEAVY BLANKET (who also plays with J in WITCH) stepped in on second guitar. Backed by the best rhythm section out there—MARIO RUBALCABA and MIKE EGINTON from Earthless—we are left with an incredible one-time happening, almost a full hour of some of the most mind bending heavy psych imaginable. With absolutely insane artwork from TIM LEHI, In a Dutch Haze is a lavish double LP with a gatefold sleeve, pressed on limited edition color vinyl.

LP - Fresh & Onlys - Early Years Anthology - $15.99
- Castle Face
LP - Heavy Blanket - Heavy Blanket - $17.99
With a thriving solo career and a busy touring schedule with DINOSAUR JR, one would think that J MASCIS has enough on his plate musically, but when he gets back home to Western Massachusetts the first thing he likes to do is head down to his home studio, grab the guitar, stomp on the muff pedal and wail! Rounding up longtime friends JOHNNY PANCAKE and PETE COUGAR, a rhythm section cloaked in mystery, J decided to put together a full album of screaming tunes under the name HEAVY BLANKET. Features six of the most intense, wailing guitar tracks you have ever heard come from J’s Jazzmaster. Ever wonder what Band of Gypsies would sound like if you mixed it up with Japanese Hard Psych and smoked it through a giant power bong? Well now you know. Artwork by SAVAGE PENCIL.

LP - KITCHEN'S FLOOR - BATTLE FOR BRISBANE - $24.99
LP - Lou Barlow - Brace The Wave - Seafoam Wax - $14.99
Deep Wound evolved into Dinosaur Jr. While playing in that band I began recording short songs on a baritone ukulele that I modified with heavier strings and flexible tunings. I called myself Sentridoh. My first solo LP ‘Weed Forestin’’ was a cassette that I duplicated and gave away. I was too bashful to play any Sentridoh songs for my slightly older, much cooler bandmates. I eventually started a band of my own called Sebadoh. We gained some momentum in the 90s. And then in 1994, I started another band called Folk Implosion.
By the early 2000s, everything had crashed and burned. I was alone again with my 4-track and a basic knowledge of recording. I still had a ukulele and was most comfortable writing uncomfortable songs. I love the cozy self-delusion of the creative process. Finishing songs, making records and holding the finished piece in hand is incredibly satisfying. In 2005 I made my first official solo LP under my actual name instead of a made-up, nonsense word. Around that time, I sensibly began touring with Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh again which brings me to now… 2015.
Having moved back to Massachusetts (after 17 years in Los Angeles), I recorded ‘Brace The Wave’ in 6 days with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab studios in Easthampton. Justin was the engineer for the 3 Dinosaur Jr ‘reunion’ LP’s. My ease with Justin meant I approached the sessions with focus and confidence. Songs like “Redeemed”, “Wave” and “Moving” reprise my early methods of tuning my ukulele down low and writing the songs during the recording process. Others like “Lazy” and “C+E” are traditional-style folk songs that I performed live in the studio.
Here it is, “Lou’s Anxiety Song(s)” 2015, less fretful, still restless. -Lou Barlow
LP - Osiris - Osiris - Import - $25.99
LP - Obnox - Wiglet - $17.99

LP - Sextile - A Thousand Hands - $14.99
With urgency, the band quickly completed A Thousand Hands, a primitive form of rock n roll, melding surf punk, early industrial, ambient and post-punk. The album title is inspired by a form of spirit channeling that Wuebben was experimenting with one night. After doing open eye meditation for a long period of time, he observed thousands of hands reaching down towards him, violently in an extremely frightening, simultaneously exciting manor. The experience left such an impression on the band, it became the first track on the album as well the album title.
Still, whilst Sextile's journey on A Thousand Hands' has undoubted moments of bleakness & catharsis, the band express their will to live, to confront their demons and forge on in search of better days, making for a captivating & spellbinding listen upon the way." - Felte
- Ever / Never
LP - Shit And Shine - Everybody's A Fuckin Expert - Import - $29.99
LP - Sweet Cobra - Earth - $11.99
The follow-up to 2010’s “Mercy” (Black Market Activities), “Earth” is markedly notable in its extraordinary refinement shining through the music itself in spades. There’s no rough edges, no jarring moments, no uncooked concepts. From the first note to the conclusion of the 12-song bang-ouevre, there is crystal clear purpose and cohesiveness throughout. It has the confidence and catchiness of the heavier moments of Queens Of The Stone Age with the drive of The Jesus Lizard. It has the surge and wallop of Quicksand while delving into far more diverse sonic territories. The pairing of Talbot and Ballou as co-producers has truly yielded a stunning, classic heavy album for the ages.
